Introduction to the Social Work Program

1. Program Highlights

The Social Work program at Tianjin University of Technology is designed to serve the national strategy of innovation-driven development and meet the needs of regional socioeconomic progress. Positioned at the forefront of both international and domestic developments in the field, the program is committed to cultivating high-quality social work professionals who possess strong academic grounding, practical competence, innovative thinking, and a deep sense of social responsibility.

2. Overview of the Discipline

Established in 1999, the Social Work program at Tianjin University of Technology has steadily developed into a comprehensive academic track. In 2006, the university launched a master’s concentration in social work under its Sociology graduate program. In 2015, it began offering a professional Master of Social Work (MSW). In 2019, the university became the first in China to jointly offer an undergraduate program in Social Work with a focus on Elder Care and Management. In 2021, the program was recognized as a National First-Class Undergraduate Major.

3. Educational Objectives

Graduates are expected to master theories of social work, practical intervention skills, and policy analysis competencies. They are well-prepared for advanced applied roles across local departments and institutions affiliated with the social work system of the Communist Party of China, as well as in local bureaus of civil affairs, human resources and social security, health commissions, judicial affairs, enterprises, educational institutions, and grassroots organizations such as trade unions, the Communist Youth League, the Women’s Federation, and various social welfare agencies.

Introduction to Social Work, Introduction to Sociology, Social Psychology, General Psychology, History of Social Welfare Thought, Social Policy, Logic, Human Behavior and the Social Environment, Social Statistics, Research Methods in Social Investigation, Social Work Methodology, etc.


5. Career and Further Study Pathways

Graduates pursue careers in government agencies, civic and mass organizations, nonprofit and social work institutions, healthcare and rehabilitation services, and educational settings. Alumni are widely employed across civil affairs departments, government offices, trade unions, the Communist Youth League, women’s federations, schools, hospitals, the justice system, and a range of social service organizations, where they provide professional expertise and services.
